Archives for category: I learn

This past weekend we acquired:

a 3-in-1 multi-cooker!! It’s a rice cooker, a pressure cooker, and a slow cooker! So excited to start experimenting with it.  Apparently, the Top Chef contestants are allowed to take ONE item with them… and this is what most pick.  Don’t ask me where I heard that, but I like to think I’m in the company of top chefs 😉

Also, I found this website, Pressure Cooker Diaries, that is probably going to be my new must read.

Our first experiment? Cranberry sauce:

A little too liquidy but smells good! Updates on recipes/food photos & such after turkey day.

Continuing on my dubstep theme for the week:

Oh wow.  approx 5 mins after I announced I’m not into dubstep, this comes on.  I’m addicted.

Ruby Frost’s voice is gorgeous and I can’t stop listening to this song!

So after announcing this wkend that I am not into dubstep, I ended up spending way too much time on youtube watching dubstep vids.  I decided I can’t just listen to dubstep music but I can watch people actually dubstep! Like this dude…

And that’s fo real! No effects! Check him out on Ellen

Although I regularly write greenmarket picks for Nona Brooklyn I decided to try another Profile piece.  This time it was Tanoreen.  It’s in Bay Ridge (like 1 hr away!) and has been around for years but has recently had a massive PR explosion.  Everyone’s raving about it! Below are Rawia (the chef/owner, right) & her daughter, Jumana (admin).

It’s family style middle eastern/mediterranean food and its delicious!! Food photos after the jump!

Few things I’m lovin’ right now:

1) My customized Duck Sauce song

2) The Brooklyn Nets

3) The Buffet Rule.  And as my mom says “It’s not like we’re gonna stop spending”

Yesterday, I finally made it to the Alexander McQueen exhibit at the Met.  First of all, I have never ever spent that much time at the met! Secondly, it blew my mind! It was such an amazing exhibit.

Not only were the clothes breathtaking but the layout itself and the overall execution of the theme of each room was absolutely outstanding!! Each room had a completely different feel – from the lighting & music to the “head treatments” and construction that transported you to another place.  I think that added immeasurable value to the exhibit because honestly I kept thinking “well, I could’ve just gone to the store every season”, but this really allowed you to see his inspirations & understand the moods behind each collection.

are you?

I’ve got a pit in stomach & knot in my throat… Waiting for the bus to come & clear out the office. THE END

Anyway, I don’t know why this is the song association of the day but it is.

I’ll get back in gear, maybe tomorrow, most likely next week.  So don’t leave me… I’ll have ice cream making updates, doggy treat baking adventures, photos of shoes I can’t afford, links to published pieces and more!

Tell me what you think!

My blogging priorities are all out of whack… I’ve been meaning to blog about Pro Mujer since March, but since it requires more writing than photos I just keep putting it off.  But no more!

Pro Mujer is a international micro-finance organization that empowers Latin American women through loans, business training, and healthcare services.  I have been interested in micro-finance since college & actually looked for a job/volunteer opportunity with them upon graduating, but nothing was available.  So after finally finding myself more “settled”, I decided to join Pro Mujer’s Junior Committee late last year, but became active earlier this year as we planned for Pro Mujer’s 20th anniversary celebration (big thanks to all who came out & supported btw!)

I don’t want this to be the longest blog post ever but I think there’s so much to say about the organization… I’ve been amazed by the caliber of the staff, the people the organization attracts for support, and its overall impact.  Pro Mujer’s loans create a cycle of empowerment within the community allowing women to make something of themselves & better provide for their families.  I think what most attracted me was that Pro Mujer is completely well rounded rather than just focusing on handing out money and their work really focuses on the needs of each community.

So… now… I/we need a little help from you guys. Recently, one of my Junior Committee colleagues, Giovanna Loiotile, was picked by LVMH/Make Up For Ever as 1 of 5 NYC trendsetters.  The video is a “day in the life of” type of thing & it prominently features Pro Mujer (with a lil cameo by yours truly! haha) – which is super exciting because if she wins the video will be featured at Fashion Week in September, raising Pro Mujer’s visibility exponentially!

Here’s what you gotta do (it wont take more than 5 mins – promise!):

1) Please visit the “Make Up For Ever USA” Facebook page

2) “Like” Make Up For Ever’s page (click the “like” button on the top left corner”)

3) Scroll down the page to the “Giovanna Loiotile Make Up For Ever Trendsetter” video

4) “Like” the video

Voting ends tomorrow so please please vote ASAP! As cheesy as it sounds, your vote counts! Gracias
